Reaching out to Seniors by Telephone
December 14, 2020
The Philippine Centre Canada (PCC) and the Ottawa Valley Filipino-Canadian Senior Citizens’ Association (OVFCSCA) launched the Seniors’ Centre Without Walls (SCWW) telephone-based training activities with seniors which will be operational from December 14, 2020 to April 30, 2021. The project is funded by the Older Adults Centres’ Association of Ontario and targets seniors in the Filipino-Canadian community in Ottawa. In this partnership, the PCC acts as the Project Holder, while the OVFCSCA is the Project Implementer.
Five volunteers from OVFCSCA received training from the SCWW Secretariat on how to run the program and become facilitators of their respective groups of seniors. A group ranges from 5-8 participants and they run a session with them by telephone. Activities of a session could be story-telling (for example, recalling participants’ lives in their younger years), games such as bingo, trivia, poetry reading, listening to music.
Seniors from the Filipino-Canadian community are encouraged to participate in this program. There is no fee required, just their time and enthusiasm. For more information, please contact Cora Guillermo at telephone: (343) 463-2346 or (613) 699-4626 or cmguiller1@hotmail.com
