PCC’s Affirmation of Commitment to Canadian Values and Call for Protection of Right to Freedom of Expression in the Philippines and End to Systemic Racism in Canada
July 1, 2020
The following is a public statement made by the PCC Board and circulated to the Filipino-Canadian community:
In commemoration of Canada Day 2020, the Philippine Center Canada (PCC) affirms its commitment to the Canadian fundamental values of democracy, multiculturalism, diversity, inclusion, equity, and fairness. The PCC also recognizes and extols the important contributions of Filipino-Canadians across Canada towards a better Canada.
The PCC is grateful to Canada for economic and social advancement opportunities and the freedoms we Filipino-Canadians enjoy and benefit from. Forever connected to the Philippines by virtue of heritage, our desire is that our compatriots in the Philippines be able to enjoy the same basic freedoms that we have here in Canada. These include freedom of expression and freedom of assembly without fear of reprisal, intimidation and sanction.
In view of the recent events, the PCC stands in solidarity with the rest of the world in condemning the existence of systemic racism and police brutality against the members of the black, indigenous and visible minority communities here in Canada and abroad. The PCC is also concerned about the intimidation of the media and the sanctions on journalists exercising the freedom of speech and expression in the Philippines. The PCC calls for an end to these inequalities and oppression and is committed to supporting efforts to eradicating them.
All Filipinos, wherever they are in the world, hope for a better and prosperous life – one that can only be attained through hard work and equality in the context of freedom and democracy. We, Filipino-Canadians, are proud of our Filipino heritage and proud of Canada, our homeland.
Mabuhay ang Canada! Happy Canada Day to All!
