Paskong Pinoy sa Ottawa, or Filipino Christmas in Ottawa, was a vibrant and festive event held on December 2nd at the Peter A. Herrndorf Place at the National Arts Centre (NAC). Jointly organized by the Philippine Centre Canada (PCC), the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa, and the NAC, this event aimed to bring the spirit of Filipino Christmas to the Ottawa community.

The event’s highlight was the holiday market, which showcased a wide variety of holiday goodies and gifts made by local Filipino businesses and artisans. Attendees had the opportunity to explore the market and find unique and handmade presents for their loved ones. From delectable Filipino treats like Silvanas and Karioka to intricately crafted handicrafts, there was something for everyone at this market.

Apart from shopping, attendees also had the chance to learn how to make a parol, a traditional lantern that is an iconic symbol of Christmas in the Philippines. Many enthusiastic participants gathered around as skilled instructors guided them through the process of creating their own parols. It was a delight to see the lanterns come to life, with vibrant colours and intricate designs adorning them. The Philippine Ambassador to Canada, the Honorable Maria Andrelita Austria also delighted the crowd of young children with storytelling sessions, sharing tales and traditions from the Philippines.

      

In the background, the sounds of Filipino Christmas carols added a lively and joyful atmosphere to Paskong Pinoy sa Ottawa. Attendees were serenaded with familiar tunes such as “Ang Pasko ay Sumapit” (Christmas Has Come) and “Himig ng Pasko” (Christmas Melody). The all-Filipino choir from the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary church came together to perform these carols, showcasing their talents and spreading holiday cheer to all who attended. 

The event was open to the public, with free entry for everyone. This allowed people from all walks of life to experience the rich cultural traditions and warmth of the Filipino Christmas. Families, friends, and individuals of all ages came out to enjoy the festivities and immerse themselves in the Filipino Christmas spirit. Paskong Pinoy sa Ottawa not only provided a platform for local Filipino businesses and artisans to showcase their products, but it also created a sense of community and cultural exchange. The event served as a reminder to Filipinos living in Ottawa of their rich heritage, while also introducing other Ottawa community members to the vibrant Filipino culture and traditions.

The collaboration between the Philippine Centre Canada, the Philippine Embassy in Canada, and the National Arts Centre was key in making Paskong Pinoy sa Ottawa a grand success. By bringing together organizations that are dedicated to promoting and celebrating Filipino culture, the event was able to create an immersive and authentic experience for attendees.
