Healthy Aging for Filipino-Canadian Seniors: Healthy Eating for Healthy Aging
Diet is a big factor in maintaining health and vitality as we grow older. This was the main message of Maram Saeed, a Registered Dietitian, who ran a workshop with Filipino-Canadian seniors, twenty-four of whom attended in person while four participated online. The workshop entitled, “Healthy Eating for Healthy Aging” was held last December 9, 2023.
Ms Saeed highlighted the importance of understanding the changes our bodies undergo as we age, and the subsequent shift in our nutritional needs. By addressing and accommodating these changes, we can prevent common health issues and improve our overall well-being. Throughout the presentation, specific nutrients that are particularly crucial for the elderly were discussed, such as calcium, vitamin D, fibre, and protein. Attendees received practical tips on maintaining a balanced diet, including portion control, meal frequency, and the importance of proper hydration.
Moreover, the presentation explored how to make favourite dishes healthier, offering easy and nutritious recipes tailored specifically for the elderly. By incorporating healthier options into their meals, Filipino-Canadian seniors can enjoy delicious food while prioritizing their health.
To ensure the attendees received the most relevant information, valuable resources were shared, including information tailored specifically for the Filipino community in Canada. This ensured the content was personalized and culturally appropriate for the participants.
Before beginning the presentation, Ms Saeed posed a question to the participants to encourage their active participation. She asked them to reflect on what healthy eating means to them and how their understanding of healthy eating may change as they age. This question prompted a thoughtful discussion and allowed participants to share their perspectives and experiences. By understanding the importance of proper nutrition and making small adjustments to their diet, Filipino-Canadian seniors can age healthily and enjoy a higher quality of life.
